I wonder how much of a say PJ had in the production of this album, given that this is her "most mathy" songwriting... perhaps she wanted to ensure the intertwining guitar and drum parts were always audible, and as a results the album loses a lot of punch

What you two are missing is the fact that I have tried to turn Dry up to the maximum volume I can, and it STILL DOESN'T ROCK PROPERLY. Whatever brainless fuckhead was in charge of engineering it basically delivered a bloody masterclass in how to fuck up a perfectly good album by chopping off its balls in post-production. This is an album that should kick out the fucking jams, and all it can barely manage is some garage band thrashing about. Sheela-Na-Gig needs to sound all-consuming, not the wimpy, fussy arseing about with muffled, buried vocals it ends up sounding like. The album is supposed to easily jump the hurdle, but it gets tripped up and faceplants under it, all thanks to an incompetent idiot being put behind the mixing desk. Thanks, stupid engineer. Thanks so very much for ruining Dry for me. Thanks, I really appreciate being unable to properly appreciate an album because of your fuck-up.

For me, Rid of Me has a fantastic production which should never be touched. It's meant to played loud which, upon doing so, will reveal an immense dynamic range. Everything Albini touched has the most beautiful sound, The Jesus Lizard and Dirty Three being other favourites. Let's not forget Surfer Rosa, as well. Dry, however, doesn't quite have it. All my opinion alone, of course.

Dry and Rid Of Me are both in need of a bloody good remaster. They're meant to be played loud but it just doesn't come across.

And, yes, this album would be amazing with the production from Rid of Me. Dry, which is my favourite album, does show its age production-wise

In reference to the posts a bit lower down, Dry wasn't produced by Albini. He did the follow-up Rid of Me.

Well, makes sense, but I can't get past the whole "mastering is off" part. I'm a productionfreak in a way, I'd like to get more into this album but I just find the whole mixing job a complete trainwreck, so most of the time I'm too busy facepalming and thinking "a monkey could've produced this better" instead of airguitaring/headbanging/getting really into it. For what it's worth, I prefer TBYML in the sonic department anyways.

v to be frank i'm a huge albini fan and love his production, but Dry shows why Albini shouldn't have produced more Harvey albums. though the mastering is a bit off, the songs are raw and confrontational as ever and the songwriting is super. my favourite Pj harvey album on some days.

Well, I'm not denying that it's a good album, but the production seems lacking - drums in particular are pretty weak. Steve Albini did a better job with Rid of Me...

I also love "Rid of Me" very, very much, but this is as good. Too bad no one can hear a track from it.
