"Menocide" was condemned by Robert Franklin of Fathers & Families for 'promoting the murder of men'. Otep Shamaya (songwriter and vocalist for OTEP) responded to the criticism by saying: "I don’t see it that way. Indeed, I am an emotional person and I use angry words, but they are aimed (mostly) at IDIOTS and MONGRELS. Perhaps YOU equate men with the likes of those scourge. But not me. I am an equal opportunity dispenser of rage."

“Menocide is not about men. It’s really about abusers, rapists, vile beings that perpetrate violence against women. The idea that I hate men is absurd,” she insists, listing band members, her brothers and “best friend” as male. “Certain people have reactions to songs like that when it’s really about victims speaking out that we have a right to exist. It's not an anti-male song. I'm speaking out for women who are victimized."
