Biography

  • Founded In

San Diego, San Diego County, California, United States

Since the summer of 1997, all four members of OMA YANG have been on the move, living in different cities, pursuing different interests, and allowing each to develop their individual styles. When the members found themselves in the same place at the same time the result was short, intense bursts of songwriting containing a sense urgency and energy. Where previous efforts, their split LP (on Sweden's Tripoli Records) and debut full length From the Heart of Jumbo Malaria (Slowdance Records), captured the band members developing their individual styles in a group environment, Bang Bang finds the quartet more polished than ever. The band utilizes their newfound vision by taking full advantage of the dynamics of distance that have shaped their unique sound.

On OMA YANG's second album Bang Bang, the group achieves a new cohesiveness and clarity of sound within their music. It finds them creating a brand of noisy instrumental rock and roll that is up to par with their indie rock peers (Mogwai, Oxes, Don Caballero), as well as exploring their experimental side which owes much to musical pioneers such as Brian Eno, Captain Beefheart, and Can. Dueling guitars and a raucous rhythm section confront the listener with a playful dissonance that slowly evaporates into ethereal melodies built around synthesizers and delicate ambience. Bang Bang finds the band at their strongest yet, having finally come to reside together after years of exchanging tapes and writing songs from a distance.

The group have spent the years since their last album touring with such up-and-coming acts as Explosions in the Sky, Six Parts Seven, and Volta Do Mar while also opening for such established bands as US Maple, 764-HERO and American Analog Set. During this constant touring OMA YANG have managed to craft the songs found on Bang Bang, while allowing the skills of record engineer Rafter Roberts (Blackheart Procession, Hot Snakes) room to work within the demanding confines of their complex song structure. The passion and energy for their music that OMA YANG display during their triumphant live shows manifests itself in the incredible atmospheres and lunatic textures of Bang Bang.
