Biography

Normanton Street are a musical force based in Brighton (UK) consisting of Ned, Nicholson and Phoebe Freya. The band's sound is lyrically focused with three distinct vocals, jazz influenced guitars, warm bass grooves and tight rhythmic drums.

Ned and Nicholson (both on bass, guitar, and vocals) have been close friends since childhood, and lived on the same street in Bradford where they grew up. Together they grew up making music in various formats and line ups, and would jam at local bars after moving to Brighton, until they stumbled across Phoebe (vocals) one night after a show. The trio put together a Lauryn Hill cover, but soon realised that their unique chemistry could not be limited to one song.

Since then, Normanton Street have quickly amassed a following off musical prowess and a lot of hard work. They’ve played gigs and festivals across the UK, Europe and US, including France, Spain, Croatia, Belgium, Holland and Austin (Texas). As well as opening for high-profile artists like the legendary Talib Kweli and Mercury-nominated poet Kate Tempest. Meanwhile, Normanton Street’s success has made them favourites in Brighton, where the band resides. The band was selected as The Independent’s ‘New Music of the Week’. This momentum attracted attention from various booking agents and venues over in New York, where the band went on a trip and played four shows.

Never ones to wait around for the industry, Normanton Street have achieved all this success in such a short space of time by releasing music on a label started by Ned and Nicholson, QM Records. Under the label they have released multiple Normanton Street EPs as well as a plethora of other talented artists. As QM Records, Ned and Nicholson regularly host music nights as well as DJ in Brighton and London showcasing upcoming talents.

Normanton Street have released several EPs to critical acclaim, Phoebe Freya EP, Much Respect and Life's Real gaining considerable plays on streaming platforms and getting spins on Reprezent Radio, Worldwide FM, BBC Radio Bradford, Leeds and Sussex, Platform B. With features in Fred Perry Subculture, Clash Magazine, Wordplay Magazine, The Pit London, Hase Magazine write ups in The Independent, Telegraph and Argus, Brighton and Hove Independent, The Argus to name just a few publication

with other musical works Commissioned by Bradford Council and Sound UK respectively.

The band spent lockdown working on new music, returning to the stage in October with an intimate gig at Brussels venue L'Archiduc to try out their new music. Other dates followed in London at Hootananny in Brixton and 180 Strand. The band flew out to Barcelona to grace the stage for 2 nights at Harlem Jazz Club and ended the year with a gig at The Canteen in Bristol. The band are ready to attack 2022 with renewed zeal with gigs planned in the UK, Europe and further afield.
