On “Northern Attitude“, Kahan uses his upbringing in Vermont, a cold, harsh place, as a backdrop for a lifestyle focused on keeping one’s self and loved ones alive and comfortable through routine and physical preparation, at the expense of connection, community, and “living” over survival. In a moment of self-reflection, Kahan observes how hollow and lonely a life this mindset can result in one living, and although recognizing he may not be able to shed this mindset quickly, shows self-awareness and asks for patience as he attempts to overcome his nature in an attempt to connect with someone else–seemingly an ex-lover he had previously pushed away with this behavior.
