The main riff was one of Cobain's oldest, dating back to a home demo he made with Dale Crover on drums under the guise of Fecal Matter in 1985. It grew to be called 'Pay To Play', although once Nirvana signed to Geffen, Cobain felt fraudulent singing about unscrupulous club owners who charged bands to play gigs.
The name was changed during the Nevermind sessions.
