Biography

Ninety One or 91 (Kazakh: Тоқсан бір, transliteration: Toqsan bir) is a Q-Pop boy band formed by JUZ Entertainment in 2014 in Kazakhstan. The band consists of five members:

  • A.Z. (Азамат Байболатұлы Зенкаев - Azamat Baybolatuly Zenkaev) : Leader, Lead Rapper

  • ALEM (Батырхан Абайұлы Мәлік - Batyrkhan Abayuly Malikov) : Main Vocalist

  • ACE (Азамат Қайратұлы Ашмақын - Azamat Kayratuly Ashmakyn) : Dancer, Vocalist

  • ZaQ (Дулат Болатұлы Мұхаметқали - Dulat Bolatuly Muhametkali) : Dancer, Main Rapper

  • BALA (Данияр Кулумшин - Daniyar Kulumshin) : Lead Vocalist

Ninety One is the founder of a new musical genre called Q-POP (Qazaq-pop, Kazakh pop), which originates from the western pop & k-pop. The band producer is Yerbolat Bedelkhan, who is also a member of the Kazakh group ORDA.

The group was founded in 2014, based on the "K-Top Idols" project, the main goal of which, was creating idol groups. A.Z. and ZaQ were the winners of this project. BALA and ALEM joined the group through a casting. ACE joined the group after training for 2.5 years at S.M. Entertainment agency in South Korea. Initially, the band was called KTI-boys, but after a year and a half of preparation, they changed the group name to Ninety One - the new name refers to the year 1991 when Kazakhstan won its independence from the former Soviet Union.

Ninety One released their debut single, Айыптама! (Aiyptama! eng. Don't judge!), on September 1, 2015 and the music video for this song was released on October 8, 2015.
On December 1, 2015, they released their first EP, Айыптама (Aiyptama). This mini album consists of 5 songs. Two additional MVs were released for this EP: Қайтадан (Qaıtadan eng. Again) and Қалай қарайсың? (Qalaı Qaraısyń? eng. What do you reckon?).

On May 1, 2017 the band returned to the stage with a song titled Su asty (eng. Underwater), which foreshadowed a new full album, QARANGY ZHARYQ (eng. Dark Light). At the presentation of the first section of the album QARANGY ZHARYQ members explained that this album will consists of five small albums, each including two songs. First part was released on May 28, 2017, album was completed by the end of 2017.

On the 25th of June, 2018 Ninety One released E.Yeah, the first song of their new album Dopamine, quickly followed by All I need released on the 8th of August. The third song of the album - Boyman, came out on the 24th of October.

On August 4th, 2020 it was announced that A.Z has left the group.
