I feel like this song is an artistic representation of the semicolon; it's a sentence that could have ended but refused to. Coming back from the hospital for the second time while constantly reminding myself of how Trent Reznor wrote this song made me think of the semicolon. Trent could have ended his life in that beach house, but he didn't. This is the artistic representation of someone clinging to life with all the strength they can muster. This is Trent Reznor's semicolon.

Became inspired enough to write this in dedication to my morning today listening to this masterpiece of a song. (Before you see the link, I know we're all NIN fans here but please be warned that I reference self-harm and suicide in detail just in case if you're sensitive to those topics. I wish not to hurt those who are still healing.): https://docs.google.com/document/d/11fDtmcJm8Py4rDg8PCj042BDXwUZXjjugoAS5Ve5rUQ/edit?usp=sharing

Thank you so much! I figured people would enjoy finding what I post on this website like Easter eggs if they're interested. I also love spreading love about music that comforts me, what can I say!

i called this my suicide song because i would listen to it while gazing at the sea often(my comfort place) whenever everything was going wrong. a bad break up almost sent me down that route last year. but now i want this song to be the song that uplifts me. nothing can stop me from living happily.

Have you read about what Trent Reznor said about the creation process of this song? I think it fits pretty well with what you talked about and I think that you could find solace in it. Stay strong out there, and you're right, NEVER let anything get in the way from your happiness.

A few songs on The Fragile and The Downward Spiral work this way to absolute chilling effect. Trent is such a master at the transition between songs

I fell in love with NIN while listening to this. TR admitting he was sucidal during its creation makes it mean so much more to me. The lyrics will be my epitaph.
