Trent's at his best when he's doing his more electronic stuff compared to the more guitar-heavy stuff (except Broken; Gave Up is a contender for top 3 NIN song). So it's natural that this would be his best post-Fragile work. It's probably the most unique NIN album too, the sound goes very well with the whole sci-fi concept.

More than a decade later and this album still sounds so sharp, relevent, and, at times, oddly beautiful in its cynical fury. I love Trent's inclination to blur the lines between the obscene and profane; it's a large barrel of double entendres – some of which allow for much needed comic relief while touching upon some pretty dark subjects.

Unbelievable how good this is produced and composed. Downward Spiral - Fragile - Year Zero are holy trinity of NIN albums.

Fuck, I miss the days when I just discovered NIN and this was the album that stuck with me the most. I had it on repeat for days, visiting all the ARG sites while they were still live. Fuck man, where does the time go?

One of these fully prophetic albums, personally one of my faves "covid-19 days" records. Well 13 years ago, it didn't get enough of respect, currently it's more authentic than ever.

Doesn't Year Zero portray Christianity as the powerful hand that’s pulling all the strings behind the nation, and drugging the water supply? Whereas present reality has the bulk of them painted as ignorant boomers who are (more proportionately) dying off amidst a global pandemic? I mean, hardly prophetic – maybe even the polar opposite at some points – but sure; definitely ahead of its time, musically. I think Trent painted a grim picture of the future but [spoilers aside], if we make it another 15 years, it’s going to be just as politically tense, paranoid-inducing, and generally shitty as it is today. Probably worse.

Yeah, probably just my interpretation from the physical packaging of this album – seen in pics here; https://www.discogs.com/release/4610881-Nine-Inch-Nails-Year-Zero – coupled with my presumptions of Trent and his views of religion.

Eh, I always thought the Christian references Trent peppered throughout the album and ARG were pretty unsubtle and on the nose, but maybe not. The lyrics and tone of "Vessel" - starting with "I let you put it in my mouth" - works well as a double entendre for taking holy communion, a super soldier pill, or sex. Then there is the entirety of the track "God Given", which has enough Christianity and dogma vibes for the whole album...

Yeah that's very clearly a response to the Bush era Focus on the Family type people. That hasn't aged too well, considering how much conservative ideology has changed since then (social conservatives, for better or for worse, are a loud minority at this point even if they hold institutional power, and their arguments about things like sexual promiscuity seem much more secular than religious nowadays). But the parts about pointless warmongering, climate change, and disdain for other people still stand out.

Listening to this during the coronavirus craze is far scarier than some Trump/political reason, this is more of a sci-fi apocalyptic album (not gonna pretend it isn't political tho) so this feels terrifying, especially once you reach zero sum

Along with The Fragile this is peak NIN. What a follow up to that piece of shit that was With Teeth.

Fantastic album, second best by them for me <3 Love the Electronic influence in this album. Trent is a better Skrillex than Skrillex.
