such a fantastic album , on a surface level maybe it's less aggressive and heavy than other nin albums but as you peel off more and more layers of it the album really shows its true colors

Y'know. This album never really HIT like it did after I listened to it a few times but when I got the Audiophile Mastered Version the bass and fun of the album just increased drastically! I will admit it's a small mastering change (and from the forums I've read it's not even that great of a mastering to begin with) but for me it's what I needed to love this album more.

I'm pretty mad at myself for neglecting this album for as long as I have. Immediately dig the vibe of this more than Pretty Hate Machine and Year Zero. Very underrated

Definitely a grower. Its, I don't know... soft? clublike? tone didn't excite me very much at first but the more I listened, the more I appreciated it. I think it's best to experience that album like yours truly did, so at night and alone. Well, I guess the former's more important.

Such a wildly misunderstood album for so long. NIN haven't sounded this maliciously detailed and produced since The Fragile, not to say that works like Year Zero aren't deep, have complex layers, but this is The Fragile level of insane hi-def sound. The song-structures/songwriting also to me feels more intricate, the songs feel pretty complex, fantastic record and it's what made the following EPs possible.

Coming to this years later, this album's incredible and aged supremely well, it has so much subtle darkness and exploring musical ideas and textures Trent might be a little too shy earlier on, a subtler, darker album more focused on rhythms and dark grooves.

I’ve changed my mind about the fragile but I’ll still take this over with teeth any day

Very Mid album, Some tracks are decent some are meh. I would not call it a bad album is generally a 6/10 for me. The deluxe is better but this is an album I would not go out of my way to purchase on vinyl.

This is a good analysis, it is indeed reminiscent of the 90s work in that way, it doesn't have that "assault" attitude which I guess is what people expected when Trent referenced TDS. But in terms of the production and in general style of music, this was the closests thing we have gotten to Spiral/Fragile. There are so many layers in almost all of the songs, sometimes this is my fav NIN album. It is also arguably far darker than any 00s work from NIN. Plenty of self-loathing dark lyricism on here, very angsty and anxious driven record, it still frustrates me some peopel see this as his "happy" album or something, when it's literally named after a suicide term.

I keep coming back to this one enjoying it for different things every time. Today I have noticed that this one really inherited the soundscapes that TR&AR scores have, it's very subtle most of the time. It's rarely in your face and I keep discovering new sounds after more than 6 years of listening to this one. This album, at points, sounds haunted. All the out-of-tune otherworldly, ghostly, noisy sound bits that are hidden within soundscapes of the songs perfectly capture the feeling of the old photographs present in the booklet artwork. With all that being said, I still can't fucking get past "Everything" being on this album. Way to break the mood. It's a cool and unusual NIN song, but it feels extremely out of place and could easily just not be here at all. If it was a random B-Side, people wouldn't even think it could be a part of Hesitation Marks, seeing how it was originally written for an unreleased Interscope compilation.

And it's not just me. Trent himself said the following about Everything: "It's become an irritant to me."

I love Everything, but with all of that said; your description for the album is very precise, it kind of reminds me of Spiral and Fragile in some ways with how dense this album is, it feels to me like this album has the production and layering qualities of those two records, it feels..really big, there is a lot of happening underneath the surface on this album. I also feel like that Trent here criticizes himself a lot, more so than one any other album, in my opinion, I always get really self-loathing vibes out of this record where Trent mostly always purely blames himself rather than anybody else. It does sound haunted and its lyricism is also really dark It bothers me when people say this album is happy, it is very dark both lyrically and musically

I just can't, I have honestly tried listening to it at home many times. There's perhaps maybe 2-3 amazing tracks. Find My Way is my it track and that's it. All Time Low is... all right, it kinda seems like it would belong in The Fragile (reminds me of The Big come Down for some reason).

I started my NIN journey with this album, and even bought CD.. and I regret my money spent on it. Few songs are worth, the rest is kinda forgettable. I'm thankful for this record that I discovered this band, yet I guess I could start with "With Teeth", which was my second album from them and it's way, way better.

Yo that album has some awesome beats, rhytms and shit - but the original master is shit and takes away from the experience. Have you heard the "audiophile" masters?

Well, I don't think at this point there is really a way to officially get it - torrenting is your best bet.

You know, I really don't like criticising albums, especially if I bought them.. but even lately, let's say, week ago, I gave Hesitation Marks another chance. The only effect, I found "All Time Low" more interesting than before - yet, this gives me three songs I like, and the rest of album literally bores me to death, I can't even listen to it as a whole. I really rarely have such impression, which is depressing. / And for dark jazz - glad you liked it! I had similar thoughts discovering this genre, yet it also reminded me dark ambient, which is one of my beloved genres of all time (I hope you know it already? :D)

Strange, i think this is the best post The Fragile album from NIN. Well now with Bad Witch out, that changed, but i still think it's a great electronic soundscape album.
