Then he took his time in the sun and dreamed to understand a single grain of sand

The existential sentiment echoed through "we were here" is definitely a fitting way to finish their live shows, which are still so good.

Well, I agree there are some dynamic-ruining gaps; but as for animal noises, I'd only wish them to be much louder 'cause they're get immediately muffled by the background noise in my own apartment :-Р The ending splash is beautiful, but what comes next is only heard when you can afford a quiet moment. Not the problem of the band tho...

Guys, this song live is an otherwordly experience. I've been going to concerts for half my life, and this is quite extraordinary. My neck and throat are fucked by the end of it.

Love the Pachelbel and Bach references, and the "We were here" parts. Greatly dislike the pretentious drivel from 18:17.

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of those stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?" [2] I really like this part, to the point that I had it memorized pretty quickly.

music, lyrics – everything is great about this song. And it is one of the very few songs that can make me cry. I totally love it... <3

What an epic ending! It's absolute joy to listen to this song. I will never forget the time I heard it for the first time and the time the album was released (hence - this spring). Actually this song got me into Nightwish. No regrets about that.

"I thought they can never be better than what they did in the album "Once" , but yeah, Surprissssse. all the blessings with the free soul of Tuomas Holopainen." BUT THE POET AND THE PENDULUM ARE A MASTERPIECE AND IT'S AFTER ONCE

Perfect masterpiece, and by perfect I mean PERFECT! the feelings given by each part is so damn on and correct which is definitely magnified its beauty by the thoughtful beseeching texts. Somebody needs to congratulate Nightwish once more for this piece of art. I thought they can never be better than what they did in the album "Once" , but yeah, Surprissssse. all the blessings with the free soul of Tuomas Holopainen.

This is my new favorite Nightwish song. A fan since 2001, I've been with them and afar of them over the years. But after Storytime from Imaginaereum, I was back on board. Floor Jansen's unknown quantity tantalized me, and I bought the album, sound-unheard. No regrets. This song speaks to my love of passionate, epic music and my respect for science and my spiritual beliefs. Perfect song.
