Biography

Niña’s story covers 12 years and is full of changes, musical experimentation, searches and encounters. You could write a book about it and most certainly someone will some day. But for the moment, the best way to explain this band is through their music, through their songs that are the cornerstone of what Niña is and the people, places and events that surround this singular and special band. Niña the project of 3 very interesting, outstanding and hyperactive artists that form or have participated in different and contrasting groups such as d3ndron”, Be My Bronx”, La Live Band”, Mario”, “Gino”, “Sport”, West Side Mitras”, Los R15” and the “Volture”. Although the group “Niña” has only been 100% professionally active for three years, during more than a decade it has been the workshop for expression and the sound lab for dozens of musicians that have participated in one way or another in the forming of this group with a simple, short, feminine, innocent and easy to remember name.
Niña began in the spring of 1996 as a game for a group of teenagers, friends who dreamed of forming a rock band and performing in live concerts. During the first years, this group of friends began stretching their musical “wings" on some home-made cassettes. They begin composing, recording playing and distributing their material – ok, mostly to family and friends, but a market is a market! By the year 2000, composing and playing was no longer a game for the group of friends, but rather a need to search for and create new ways to express themselves musically. They began to perform in a variety of places, regardless of how unusual or the number of people in the audience.
The noise they made began to insinuate itself into the Monterrey music scene and began expanding into other cities, and surprisingly, at least to some cynics, into other countries. By 2003, the project became something more when a series of recordings was complied and edited locally. Niña’s first album R.O.C.K began as a compilation of the best recordings at that time, and was distributed by hand from friend to friend – almost like secret documents.
The number of Niña fans increased thanks to songs like Candy”, “Hollywood”, “Godzilla”, “Atari”, “Arena Azul, “Chubaca tiene un Secreto” and “Ella Es Mi Disco”. In 2004, Niña decides to formalize the friends’ project into something more solid, becoming a dedicated band. Then came the arduous process of composing and recording their next records. 2006 was a key year for the group, as it was the first time their music was produced professionally in their album “Laredo Love”, which included classic songs from Niña’s repertory like “Sistema Pefecto” and “9 Gigas Fantasmas”. That same year the EP “Levantate Sakuraba” was released as an introduction to the album “Punk Robot”. In 2008, “Punk Robot” gave Niña the audience it had been waiting for. With the help of musical videos and important public presentations, Niña slowly became a “force to be reckoned with”. Niña was no longer a secret”. With their participation in important music festivals such as Vive Latino” and Rockarga”, Niña was able to give their fans what they had been looking for a chance to sing along with the group. The lyrics were already well known to hard-core fans, and soon became familiar to all the new fans garnered in these and other performances. After experiencing the grueling work of recording sessions, in October of 2008, Niña decided to do live recording of the first song ever written by Niña Primavera de 96”, composed by Alejandro Isassi. This experience was almost perfect for the quartet, and was a factor in helping them decide to record the following album in the same style. Fans can enjoy “Primavera del 96” on Compilation V by Happy Fi Records: Coyote Nights. Takin us to their new ep called willie nelson vs Ralph macchio including 6 new songs all produced, mixed by niña. Niña has participated in several international festivals, including SXSW in Austin, Texas, in “Motorokr” and in Vive Latino” in Mexico City. Niña’s live performances are recommended, as the energy and enthusiasm of the group on stage is contagious, and the songs in their extensive repertory are catchy and fan favorites
