Deadpan yet emotional. Unique, one of a kind - just like the band they were before the untimely death of their previous frontman.

Joy Division's albums had less in the way of pacing and development. I love the way this album's grooves change regularly, so you never feel like you're trapped in the gloom. Also, there's a new poignancy in the guitar parts, and new drama and excitement in the synths. The great drumming continues to improve, and the vocals, bass lines, and atmosphere are exactly as good as before. Maybe if I were more of a lyrics person, or less personally acquainted with the sense of being trapped in the gloom, I would prefer the Joy Division albums like so many other people seem to. Aside from the "hits", the other New Order albums don't impress me as much as this one.

What your doing here is seeing the Joy Division records as being far dumber than they actually are, they're not stuck in the gloom as much as their stuck in the human condition.

This & Low-Life (as well as both albums' B-Sides and surrounding follow-up singles) are easily the best things New Order has ever done. Everything else is really hit or miss for me.

It's a declaration of hope for the future but a remembrance and sorrowful regret for the past in regards to Ian Curtis. Some of the lyrics were a bit cryptic for me to fully understand, but this was a great listen considering the context of its production and sonically as well. 8/10

I just can't get on with this album. It's depressing. It must be the production and not the songs that are the problem, because I really like the Peel Session recordings.

Call me crazy, but I like this the most of anything either Joy Division or New Order did. [2] i love this record so much, and don't let me start about the peel session

for me, this is my favorite work from New Order. I simply can't get into their other albums. But, Closer and Unknown Pleasures are of different statures entirely.

Movement remains my all-time favourite album. There's something very raw and funereal about it that always keeps me coming back.

Coming from the man who thinks Scott Walker's later works are 'pretentious rubbish'

It's like the first Pink Floyd album without Syd. Guys trying to emulate the songwriting of genious composers and pulling it off because they were so talented. Saying they went downhill after JD feels so wrong. They went on to find out their own songwriting and influenced the whole world in the process. This is just plain amazing. New Order, without one of the greatest songwriters all time, managed to be as influential as Joy Division.

This was their best album by far. After Joy Division they went downhill fast [3]

I'm sold. Best New Order album by a landslide. (clenchedteeth was correct, by the way.)

Definitely my favorite New Order album. It's like the best of Joy Division with New Order wrapped into one.

I wonder if the drums for Splintered In Her HEad (The Cure) were inspired by this song?
