"I'm Like a Bird" was the debut single released by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, on September 26, 2000. It went on to become one of the best-selling singles the following year, peaking at number one in Portugal (where Nelly's parents are from), number two in Australia and New Zealand, number five in the United Kingdom, and number nine in the United States. It helped establish Nelly Furtado as one of the up-and-coming pop stars of the new millennium. In 2002, "I'm Like a Bird" was nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards, but lost out to "Fallin" by Alicia Keys. The song did win a Grammy for best vocal performance, making Furtado the first woman to win the award with her debut single since Mariah Carey did 10 years earlier, and the most recent Canadian recipient. It also won "Best Single" at the Juno Awards, an annual Canadian music prize.
It is a soaring folk-pop anthem that remains one of Furtado's most recognizable tracks. In 2006, she said of the song, "I've heard it sung at karaoke or by cover bands and it was awesome — I was like, wow, I've got one of those songs. Somebody once called it a 'hairbrush song', one that girls and guys sing in front of the mirror with their hairbrush. I just think I'm lucky I have it — it's paying the bills!"
