"A Pearl" is an exploration of the lingering effects of heartache, trauma and grief. The narrator is dealing with the aftermath of an experience that has left them with a 'pearl in their head'. This pearl symbolizes the emotional scars they are left to grapple with, and the idea of rolling it around evokes the image of them trying to find a way to come to terms with the past they can't forget. The refrain of "sorry, I don’t want your touch" implies that while they aren’t dead to emotion, they aren't able to bring themselves to move on yet and accept love back into their life. The bridge expresses a sense of loneliness, as the narrator has a deep-seated need that they cannot fill by themselves. Ultimately, this song is a meditation on how pain can linger, and how it can shape a person’s inner life.
