Biography

Michael J. Johnson is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer/songwriter, and producer/engineer.
With over twenty years experience as a professional guitarist, bassist, and vocalist, Michael has been blessed to work along side artists such as Jon Secada (EMI), Lari White (RCA), Dawnn Lewis (A Different World), Take Six, Bob Dorough and Kevin Nealon (Saturday Night Live). In the studio he performed soundtracks for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, The Orange Bowl Half-Time Show, CPP Belwin (Warner Bros.), and album projects at The Record Plant (formerly Criteria Studios) in Miami, Florida. He has played in numerous bands over the years, both as a frontman and a sideman. These include Denver bands The Penguins, The Cocarolas and Strange Brew, Miami bands Public Sanctum and Fish This Big, and St. Louis band The Flat Broke Band. In addition to his solo work, he is currently the lead guitarist in Gambiza and The Jes Perry Band.
A certified ProTools engineer, Michael has produced numerous national and regional acts whose musical genres span from hardcore punk to hip/hop to classical. Currently a freelance producer/engineer, he cut his teeth at South Beach Studio (Miami) and New River Studio (Fort Lauderdale.)
As a member of ASCAP, he is a nationally recognized songwriter whose independent rock releases have been featured in films such as “Night Becomes Day” and “Samsara.” Summit Records houses one of his jazz compositions, “His Song” and rock, country, and hip-hop song credits to his name can be found on iTunes.
Michael received his doctorate in Studio Music and Jazz from the University of Miami. He resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music in the Contemporary Writing and Production program.
