After listening to this album quite a lot since it first came out in 2016, I have to say that this ranks up there as one of their most brutal along with Chaosphere. I'm always so fucking floored by how heavy this whole thing is!

It's funny seeing people debate Meshuggah albums that have incredibly minute differences. They're a very consistent band in terms of sound, so you could easily just find one awesome album and listen to that for their style. On that front, this album basically has everything they've done before, but without clipping, unlike the albums they've done since their groovier style. This might be the only Meshuggah album I listen to for a long time, these debates are silly lol.

After exploring their discography in depth, I retract this statement about Meshuggah making the same album over and over. That said, this album and Destroy Erase Improve are simply perfect imo.

Fantastic record. I'll need to sit on it a bit longer, but I've given it a few blast throughs and think it's already among my albums of the year. It's some of the heaviest, most vicious but oddly catchy music I've heard from them, the production is outstanding and the balance between ferocious technicality and gargantuan, propulsive as fuck grooves really impress me. They've also started incorporating melody in a really interesting way which gives the album a nice anthemic 'rock' feel without sacrificing any of its intensity. The pacing and more organic-feeling brand of destruction also reminds me a bit of an updated Chaosphere, which is no bad thing, either.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm here just to talk shit, but I honestly am not getting into this album at all. I love all of their other albums with the exception of Contradictions Collapse, but Violent Sleep of Reason just feels so cookie-cutter and uninspired, yet all I see is people saying it's the best thing they've done in a long time. What am I missing here?

Dunno, the record production is their best yet, and some of the songs are really unique, like, By The Ton might be out there with their best stuff for me. Nostrum, Clockworks, Born in Dissonance are all extremaly solid meshugging. The only real downside i can think of is a lack of variety, the album has this really raw feel that was pretty much gone since Nothing, notice how eerie guitar intros are entirely(?) gone, all songs start loud, progress to some chaotic insane tunes in the middle and finish loud, although there are slower and faster songs here. This whole thing feels like a motherfucking construction site from hell from the very beginning till the end and I really really enjoy this ride.

There are a lot of little moments that you kind of miss until you start to analyze the music more, like the "A LIIIIIIE" drop during Clockworks, the crazy little stairstep riff in MonstroCity which is actually becoming one of my favorites on the album, the groovy arpeggiated riff on By the Ton, the way the riff on Stifled is so stuttery and unpredictable before falling back into the main groove. I think this album does miss that one real undisputed banger track, but it's very consistent. The fluidity in the way they play is kind of what throws me off, honestly. I'm so used to Meshuggah sounding so tight and in step because they produce so heavily on the computer, but this album does sound a lot more raw and real. It comes down to my preference for some of the slower, groovier songs like Demiurge, Break Those Bones, Dancers, etc. I like Tomas and Marten's songwriting, also it's good to see Dick getting his name in the credits, but I think this album does miss Fredrik's influence.

You might be onto something, it does feel less "calculated" and more natural than earlier albums. Certainly seems like there's more of a focus on writing riffs that seamlessly flow one into another, and it's definitely missing some of those standout groovy moments that you'd expect from them. And good to see Koloss and Catch 33 at the top of your charts, I'm with you on that one haha.

I expected this one to be a piece of crap like koloss was, boring and untasteful, but as soon as i played the first track, clockworks i was blown away, i was hearing what i always wanted to hear from this band since obzen.
