can we all agree that this song is a s***show because of the poor lyrical content, but it have aged very well? I mean, back in 1999 she said ''I couldn't live without my phone / But you don't even have a home'' c'mon! We, as millennials, we know exactly the feeling of being stuck with our phones. she wrote all that superficial and selfish POV but she accidentaly hit the future by writing this... she failed in sending the message she was waiting for, but she founds something just bigger by failing it...

With all necessary respect, I don't agree to your opinion about the song. I heard "If that were me" today and it still moved me. Although I'm not a native speaker, I understood all the lyrics very well. There are only a few pop songs that are going that deep and talking about social issues. It may be weird, if a millionaire pop star sings about homeless people (same issue Phil Collins had to face with his hit "Another Day in Paradise", which I like a lot). But it definitely isn't the norm. It's the exception. Commercial productions talking about any issues always get critized for being superficial or fake, just doing it for the money or just pretending to be deep for entertainment value. It isn't the one millionth love song or break up song, "if that were me" stands out of the crowd. Its lyrics won't change the world, but maybe it will make a few people think about what they have more and how to help others in need.

But that is the question. She gave us a superficial look of what homelessness would've be. There's no way you come along talking about a social issue from a careless pov and expecting to be well suceed, so she made us reflect but not in a good way. BUT in modernity the song found itself a home, I mean, no one can live without a phone these days. I may say it aged like fine wine

My favourite song by Mel. So moving, and relates to a lot. I remember when this came out. And I loved it then
