This Intro sets the tone for the theme of Meek’s entire album, so literally that the song itself is broken into two parts. The beginning – an upbeat braggadocio depicting Meek’s ascension to the top (i.e. Dreams) – is juxtaposed by an anger-fueled tirade (i.e. Nightmares) midway through the track.
To bring it full circle, Meek’s concluding bar of the Intro (“It was something ‘bout that Rollie when it first touched my wrist, Had me feeling like that dope boy when he first touched that brick”) acts as a representation of the album art itself – a Rolex watch connected to a handcuff (in other words: a dream & a nightmare), setting the stage for the rapper’s debut studio album.
NFL team Philadelphia Eagles have embraced the song as their anthem during a rocky journey to Super Bowl Lll. Even a section of “Dreams and Nightmares” was used as their Super Bowl LII entrance song to show solidarity with Meek, who was born and raised in Philadelphia. The Eagles proceeded to win the game 41-33, earning their first super bowl. They, like Meek, succeeded despite being written off.
Following their Super Bowl victory, NBCSports Philadelphia heralded the song as “the greatest Philly sports anthem ever.”
