The Breakthrough is the seventh studio album by American R&B singer Mary J. Blige. It was released on December 20, 2005, by Geffen Records. In the first week of release, The Breakthrough sold 727,000 copies and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming Blige's third record to top the chart. It was later awarded a triple platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The Breakthrough earned Blige eight nominations for the 2007 Grammy Awards, the most of any artist that year. "Be Without You" was nominated for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories; it won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, while The Breakthrough won in the category of Best R&B Album. By December 2009, the album had sold 3.1 million copies in the United States and 7 million copies worldwide.
