“Looking In” is a song recorded by Mariah Carey for her fifth studio album, "Daydream" (1995).
Written and produced by Walter Afanasieff & Mariah Carey.
About the song, this could be a reference to the fact that while Mariah was highly successful in her career at this point, she felt trapped in her marriage to Tommy Mottola, who was reportedly “controlling” with few interests in common with her and stopping her from being close to her loved-ones. Seeing only her Grammys and chart-topping hits misses the bigger picture of her heartache. She is hiding her emotions from the outside world and in reality, is very scared. She thinks there are people more fortunate out in the world, regardless of all the fame and the hits she has. Mariah was living her life vicariously through the music videos she was (as stated in her Oprah interview) and likely never could see herself being able to live her life in the same way. It felt like something she could only dream of and never (truly) have. Mariah realizes that all her life, she’s always been the one ‘outside looking in’, and how people have pushed her aside for being bi-racial, but still can’t break her down.
