During a special event performance for Sunnyvale, CA radio station KSJO 92.3 in October 2009, singer Andy Hull explained to the audience that he was inspired to write "I Can Feel a Hot One" after having a particularly vivid dream while touring with the band after its first studio album release. The song supposedly recounts a series of intensely intimate scenes within the dream, ending with a vision of Andy's unborn child. The singer suggested that the dream had a lasting emotional effect, including positive changes in his attitude during the tour and in his relationship with his to-be-wife Amy.
