Biography

There are more than one artists called Madge :

  • 1. Madge is a solo DIY-pop project of Catherine "Cat" Leavy, based out of Los Angeles
  • 2. Madge were a short-lived pop punk band from Ballymena, Northern Ireland

1. Madge is solo music project of Catherine Leavy, the vocalist of the synth pop duo New Shack.

Her first EP titled "Fight or Flight Club" was released in November, 2018). The conceptualising of this EP was borne out of an experience from her personal studio. She was producing a project with another musician, helping him mix a song, when he took over the workstation and started doing it all himself. Cat felt disempowered, at first and wanted to call him out but she just laughed it off as if nothing was wrong. Her resentment grew over time and she penned it into her first single, titled Red James.

In her own words : “I just decided, you know what, fuck this, I'm going to try to do a project where I do everything myself. I'm going to write it. I'm going to record it. I'm going to mix it.” & it started Cat's solo music career.

2. Madge were a short-lived pop punk band from Ballymena, Northern Ireland consisting of Dan Kennedy (vocals and guitar), Mark Davidson (vocals and guitar), Chris 'Iggy' Agnew (bass) and Gerrard Dougan (drums). They split up in 2003 and Dan Kennedy went on to join The Dangerfields.

They self-released two CDr EPs - Wartime Magpies E.P. and Madge, both of which displayed a significant Green Day influence. The first CDr contained covers of the theme from the television show Fraggle Rock and Fairweather Friend by Symposium. Live they ocassionally covered artists such as the Ramones and the aformentioned Green Day. They often played shows with fellow Ballymena-based pop punk band Acupunkture. In 2003 their song Loopy Joe was featured on The Front Page: A Compilation Volume One, which was compiled by Ian Putford from The Front Page - a now-closed venue in Belfast that Madge frequently played at.

They were named after the character Madge Bishop from the Australian soap opera (and UK daytime TV staple of the era) Neighbours.
