The song begins with a long intro long intro featuring a trumpet solo from Keyon Harold. This is indicative of the other tracks on the album whereby Miller has enlisted the help of other respected names in the growing jazz/rap community, such as pianist Robert Glasper, and bassist extraordinaire, Thundercat. The song has a laidback juke feeling which at times feels like songs made by The Social Experiment.
The video could be smoother but it is offset by the beautiful scenery which surrounds Miller as he slides around. The rest plays out in a similar fashion, with Miller casually describing the growing detachment in a relationship. On the album this song follows the similarly themed Anderson. Paak collaboration, “Dang!”
According to Mac’s photographer, Justin Boyd, the music video for “Stay” was shot at the Great Salt Lake in Utah, near The Great Saltair venue where Mac performed on his "The Divine Feminine" tour.
