“One Wayne G” is a 199-song collection of demos and unreleased material by popular indie artist Mac DeMarco. It was released digitally on April 21st, 2023 without any announcement. Most songs on this collection are instrumental and ambient with only 18 songs of the 199 having lyrics, and all titles follow a dated format.
The album starts with “20180512” (May 12th, 2018) and ends with “20230114” (January 14th, 2023). All of these songs were recorded in Mac’s garage studio, with footage of him recording “20190724” (July 24th, 2019) being resurfaced on TikTok. The song "20190724", also known as "Garbage Funk", was publicized during an interview of Mac with PBS.
The title, One Wayne G, appears to allude to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. On its Instagram stories, Mac’s Record Label posted two photos of Gretzky, one with the text, “There is only One Wayne G.” The collection of demos has 199 tracks, a possible reference to Gretzky famously wearing the number 99.
Some of the titles include extra information beyond the date, such as working titles. The tracks titled with extra numbers represent the number song if multiple tracks were created on the same day.
