However it's interesting, I found Loreena long ago and can't still feel Enya. We're just different, there's nothing wrong

Deve estar com algum problema vocal, porque não quer mais saber de cantar, só lança instrumental.

She's the go-to artist people use here in Turkey when they give an example of an intellectual, sophisticated artist.

Вот она - самая настоящая музыка. Целое искусство, а не то что сегодня принято называть "музыкой". Волшебство ❤

There is no such thing. All human history is one long history of so-called "cultural appropriation" via language, commerce, and warfare.

TaranehZo - What music that belongs to "marginalized people"? Loreena McK isn't stealing anything from anyone. Musical traditions are a collective human experience; Music is owned by no one because it belongs to everyone -- all music that has existed and exists is ours because we brought it to life using sound, rhythm, voice. As far as copyright goes, her songs and compositions are her own, not stuff taken from other artists specifically. There is nothing wrong with being inspired by various cultures and musical traditions to create something unique yet at the same time familiar. I love Celtic music, but I'm from the Caribbean. If I were to get inspired by Irish or Scottish traditions and if I had the talent to play instruments or sing vocals, there'd be nothing wrong with someone like me playing Uilleann pipes, for example. I'd not be "stealing" Celtic cultures; even if I wanted to, I cannot actually "steal" the culture of Ireland. That's absurd. Grow up please.

Actually I'd argue that as far as "world music" and the like go, Loreena is rather mild on the cultural appropriation. On the other hand you see a lot of cultural appropriation in ethnic jazz, classical music and especially the so-called "post-classical" (what a misnomer!) artists. That said, I believe I recall an interview with Loreena on this and she took it quite seriously and mentioned being careful with what she uses and having studied especially European folk music intently for years.

Espoiraout is probably referring to the Indian instruments (sitra, etc.) used in post-Rubber Soul-era Beatles. Which isn't cultural appropriation anyway seeing as it was for fronted, and encouraged, by the Bharat-Ratna awarded Ravi Shankar who taught the Beatles Indian classical music so that they could incorporate it into their music and perhaps reach a larger audience across the world. Surprise, some people want to spread their culture instead of clinging to it screaming "Mine! Mine! Mine!". Loreena's Arabic influences comes from her studies in Spain where Arabic music is deeply ingrained. She has spoken about this multiple times and I can't imagine another way to give "credit" to the influences. You also bring it down to race, as if a white person couldn't be born into an Arabic culture and raised by it. This isn't the case with McKennitt, but it's a moronic statement. You're being called naive because you act like the world works in a black and white dichotomy.

People like TaranehZo are hilarious. By their logic, Spanish "appropriated" anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 words (depending on how you count them) from Arabic, along with the poetic, musical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic influences of the 8 centuries during which the Abrahamic faiths coexisted and flourished in Iberia. And what is anybody going to do about that? Travel back in time to prevent the existence of the Caliphate of Córdoba (and therefore, the Emirate of Granada later on), or the construction of La Alhambra? Hysterical! Hey did you guys know, Spanish used to be written in the Arabic script until the XVI century? That's cultural appropriation. Quick, burn all the merchant documents and literary texts with poems, songs, etc.! To those of us who aren't idjits, LMK is inspired by these traditions, not appropriating anything. History already happened -- centuries and centuries ago.

Espoiraout, you make some very good points, but the main problem with "cultural appropriation" is that the concept itself is pretty loose and nobody seems to be able to define it well or make it clear what constitutes (or doesn't) cultural appropriation. People do take things from others and call it their own, and of course I think someone wearing Indian feathers at a Halloween party is ridiculous, but ultimately a whole culture cannot be actually stolen. People give and take artistically and linguistically all the time. It is not possible for most cultures or peoples to exist in isolation and not to exchange art, ideas, music, technology, writing, etc. with one another. That's how human history has always happened; it is inevitable.
