“ONE OF ME” is the seventh track off MONTERO. It was teased on Twitter on April 21, 2019. The song dives into the many people who believed that Lil Nas X would only become successful through Old Town Road and would never get big through anything else, claiming that he would fall off. However, that wasn’t the case.
He told Apple Music:
“That was actually one of the first songs I made in 2019. It’s aged really well because a lot of these things are still said or bumbling around and regardless, I wanted people to know the things I was hearing and the things I was seeing and feeling. Even in that song, those are some of the things I started to feel about myself too, so it’s things people are saying to you and things you’re throwing on yourself into this one song.“
Elton John:
“All the people I work with knew what they wanted, and so did Lil Nas X and Giles Martin. They were decisive people. I’d say, ‘Is that too much?’ He said, ‘Yes, a bit too much, calm it down a bit.’ And I think they used the bare bones of the piano I did, because I did some other funky stuff. And maybe it shifted the track from what they wanted it to be and made it a bit too Elton. And I also sang a little on the Lil Nas X track, but they didn’t use that either. And that’s fair enough. It’s their record. I give them as much as they want, and they can just take it away and just use what they want. You have to accept that you’re playing on someone else’s record.“
