"Diet Mountain Dew" is a story of a dysfunctional relationship between two lovers that is ultimately doomed to fail. The narrator is aware of the negative consequences an unhealthy relationship can bring, but they also find themselves helplessly drawn to the other person.The chorus highlights the juxtaposition of the relationship and produces a craving for the unattainable person and place. The narrator desires the person in spite of knowing that it's not a good idea and fantasizes about the future of this relationship. The lyrics allude to a passionate and fleeting romance between two people who are emotionally unable to commit to each other in a meaningful way. The message of the song is that although you may find yourself in a relationship with someone who isn't good for you, to still be open to the possibility of love.
