even moreso when you consider that this album is both an old *and* a new style! even the fans who didn't like the last 4 albums get 4 tracks of Very 2016-2018 Krallice, and the folks who really like their experimental new releases get another unique flavor from the band with another slightly different lineup arrangement. and if you like both, you're probably me and crapping yourself over this new batch of material lmao. tracks 4 and 8 are <3 <3 <3 <3

Anyone know any other bands that use bass synth instead of bass guitar like on The Kinetic Infinite? Only other band I can think of that's ever done that is Kayo Dot.

so, the show from last thursday wrapped up, and holy fuck i am regretting not going! someone's uploading the full show on their YouTube channel, and the first set contains MORE new shit. Mick's back on guitar, Colin is continuing keyboard madness, Lev's obviously drumming, and Nick... is in the audience? and lord are they are SHREDDING. i'm not even sure how to explain the sound, but it sounds so fucking insane. check it out, opens up with an Ocrilim set into Mick and Lev duo, then Colin joins in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZLhHqUY3iM

Max Volume Silence (who did the previous Krallice/Indricothere set recording with Colin's audio) just uploaded the full 2.5 hour epic in one straight shot. you can hear the new stuff a LOT clearer here. the first 2 new tracks in set 1 really have a hard Oldest vibe to them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOHslKN3FsE

after giving it a ton of spins over the last week and a half, i think this is an absolutely stellar release. takes the deep, synthy atmosphere of Psychagogue (itself being a further evolution from Crystalline Exhaustion) and really leans into it. the way that space is utilized in this album is absolutely fantastic. lots of great droney parts with the synths too, and i've definitely started to feel that extra 70s-80s vibe that folks have been talking about. the synths lead the charge for the most part in this album, yet it still feels recognizably "Krallice". it's super experimental, yet super solid. has me wondering if this "new" lineup is gonna stick, or if they're gonna try some even weirder stuff next.

i think out of the four tracks on the album it's probably the weakest, which i feel like is not saying much; if every other track was an 8 or 9, i'd probably give it a 7.5. i like your thoughts on the ending though, leaving it more to interpretation or mystery rather than what we usually expect from the end of a Krallice album. it's actually kind of interesting that. in an album that is dripping with dank atmosphere and mystique, the last song on the album just sort of... Ends. i would actually LOVE it if, if the next album they do follows the same style, to actually just pick up immediately from that ending riff and bring it into a new track, or a continuation of that track. "Reprisals of Destiny II"? thanks for linking your review, i liked it. :)

these guys NEVER STOP bro. literally six months after they drop a full-length album where they took their style in another crazy new direction, we have ANOTHER one: https://krallice.bandcamp.com/album/psychagogue-3 i've gotta give this one a spin soon, but it sounds like they're going even further with the dense atmospheres introduced in the last two albums. i'm so excited to give this a shot and drop my thoughts on it. i really really loved Crystalline Exhaustion, and hearing that they're pushing that style even further really excites me.

OK, early thoughts; much like the previous work, i feel like the tracks on this album are actually quite straightforward on first listen, but really open up on the second and third listen, when you've had more opportunity to digest the total soundscapes of each track. the longer moments have this sort of epic feeling to them that feels just a tad more deliberate on the album overall. they are really showing their experience as a unit here, weaving something new into their sound and taking it further with each release. "Deliberate Fog" is a definite highlight off this album, feeling almost like a direct "sequel" to tracks like Crystalline Exhaustion, whereas "Arrokoth Trireme" -- which might be one of their best tracks EVER -- feels like Demonic Wealth taken to the extreme, mixing heaviness and beauty so nearly seamlessly. overall; it's mostly an expansion of the previous sound, but a lil more refined -- and i definitely mean that with the highest amount of praise.

I get your point but to me it kinda makes sense having a four track album running 38 minutes given the nature of "Psychagogue" being somewhat of a "Crystalline Exhaustion" condensate. A pretty accessible condensate on top of that. Damn, I've had a serious black metal surfeit for quite some time and Krallice actually managed to reinvigorate my interest with "Crystalline Exhaustion", so "Psychagogue" is just music to my ears. Decent length, fantastic atmosphere, great ideas (the keyboard in "Arrokoth Trireme... <3), nearly flawless execution.

two months later i think this is my second or third favorite album out of this band. but that top 3 is super fucking close to each other. i haven't been able to stop randomly humming the riffs in this album in my head since it came out ;_; they hella went in on this one, it's so cool. this album's also really been giving me a lot of renewed appreciation for Crystalline Exhaustion, Demonic Wealth, and Go Be Forgotten, three specific albums that i think were absolutely essential to this one existing.

this is 100% Crystalline Exhaustion Part 2, and i’m 100% OK with that, since Crystalline was easily my favourite thing they’d done since Go Be Forgotten and possibly since the s/t. i’m not actually sure which one I like more now. not sure if i’d quite go with Arrokoth Trireme being the best track they’ve ever done, but it’s an easy top 5; Forgiveness in Rot and the title track of Crystalline Exhaustion would also make that list (not sure what would round it out, off the top of my head). the subdued parts have the same Vangelis vibe as the latter does, which is awesome (especially a month after the man’s death, which i’m still bummed about). how many other bands release two albums this great five months apart from one another? just insane.

new album slaps - it’s got the weirdness of latter-day krallice mixed with the larger focus on atmosphere of early krallice, and atop all of that it’s got a reverb-laden atmosphere that they haven’t really used before that reminds me a lot of the second-wave norwegian bands (“frost” is likely named in tribute to the enslaved album). the synths contribute a lot to the atmosphere as well – they aren't just an afterthought; they’re a pivotal part of the arrangement, especially on the title track, which feels like “what if vangelis composed a black metal song?” the band’s playing is of course on point throughout, especially weinstein’s, which may be his best performance on a krallice record to date. i can see this becoming a favourite – i think it’s already my favourite krallice release since go be forgotten, though it’s made me realise i need to revisit mass cathexis and demonic wealth. anyway, fantastic atmosphere, fantastic compositions, fantastic performances, fantastic album.

it's so fucking good!!! you should definitely give Demonic another listen; i feel like that album's existence is pivotal to this one existing. Crystalline actually really makes me enjoy what Demonic brought to the table even more, especially with how absolutely refined the sound is on this new album. but i might be with you here; this may actually be up there as one of their best albums to date. not only an amazing first impression but i think it's really gonna shine with repeated playthroughs. (i'm on my 2nd already, lol)

tbf, my shouts for most artists are long – brevity has never been my strong suit. :v ¶ i definitely hadn’t listened to demonic wealth before the new album came out – i’d have remembered listening to such an unusual album if i’d heard it before. tbh, i think i’d totally forgotten they’d released an album last year, which definitely was a mistake. it’s fascinating; it feels like a more literal than usual take on “ambient black metal”, with ambient parts mixed with black metal, sometimes alternating between them, sometimes simultaneously. it’s hard to describe, but i like it a lot. ¶ crystalline exhaustion, though, might become my favourite krallice album since the s/t, and i think the title track is my favourite krallice track since “forgiveness in rot” – it’s so beautiful and hypnotic. i’ve been too addicted to the bass-and-drums mix of gorguts’ colored sands on colin’s youtube channel to do a full krallice discography listen, but i’ll do one soon.

i 10000% agree. the more i listen to Crystalline the more i like it. it's grown on me an insane amount; i feel like i hear the hooks and riffs in my head even when i'm not listening to it haha. also yeah, Demonic was insanely captivating when it came out last year. it felt so alien to everything they had made before, in a way that got me really excited. there's a sort of trance-like aspect to the composition of Demonic that you just kind of ride with when you listen to it. it's got a really beautiful sort of roughness to it, and it came out at the perfect time too. peak quarantine music.

IT IS TIME: https://krallice.bandcamp.com/album/crystalline-exhaustion -- first immediate early thoughts is that this album gives me hella icy vibes. it's a lot more in the vein of mid-tempo, raw symphonic black metal, like something that came out of the 90s/early 2000s, but with a more modern production style. also really interesting lineup switch! Mick is playing bass, Nick is playing guitar, Colin is on keyboards, and all 3 of them contribute to the vocals. you can really feel the influence from Demonic Wealth has been used to take their classic style to a new level. it's not nearly as frenetic as something like Mass Cathexis or Ygg huur, so it might be more accessible to folks who haven't been hot on their more technical works in recent times; it really does feel more along the lines of the first 3 albums, in a really good way. folks, the boys have done it yet again.

after finishing listening to the rest, i think my immediate top tracks are 3 and 4, "Heathen Swill" and "Archlights". 1 and 2 are really great but something about 3 and 4 really pushes it over the edge for me. absolutely massive tracks. "Dismal Entity" (5) has a really amazing middle and end point with some incredible intensity, and the title track being the last track on the album really ties a bow on the whole thing really nicely. it sounds even better within the context of the rest of the album. really fucking amazing work.

new album "Crystalline Exhaustion" dropping on January 28th. the boys just dropped a single (self-titled) and it sounds fuckin' killer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-NLJjtdh-U a little more down-tempo like Demonic Wealth, even MORE synth-heavy -- the intro alone is about 3-4 minutes and they're very present throughout the entire track -- but with a punchier mixing more in line with their earlier work (Mass Cathexis and Wolf in particular i think). it really gives off a vibe like "DC mixed with something like Diotima"... and i'm sure you don't need me to say, it's very good. i'm REAL excited for this one to drop.

if you're a fan of Demonic Wealth in particular, check out Go Be Forgotten. in some ways it almost feels like a partner to that album; they both represent pretty different flavors to their general style. the good thing about this band is that their discography is quite varied, so it's likely you'll find at least one or two albums that jive with you at the very least. you should check out Dimensional Bleedthrough as well, it's an oldie but a goodie, and i think it also hits those sort of "atmospheric" vibes that GBF and DW possess.

"Demonic Wealth" just dropped; written and recorded in isolation. this is the SPACIEST thing they've done yet; the drums were recorded on a fucking phone, and the vocals were recorded at a swamp. all guitars by colin, all lyrics and vocals by mick. some really trippy keys. i'm still listening to it right now but this is by far the most unique thing they've ever done. https://krallice.bandcamp.com/album/demonic-wealth

I think it's really impressive how they utilised the recording method of the drums here. Instead of pushing it to the foreground and maximalising the sound in an extreme/kvlt way, they pulled it back so the percussion is a distant rumble that helps creates an amazing and disconcerting sense of space. The predominant use of synths adds to that as well. Considering how scrappy and remote the recording process is for this album, it's so expansive and cohesive. God, they really are the greatest.
