Originally recorded as “Amongst The Greed” under the band’s earlier name Creep (with vocalist Corey Cinque), “Ball Tongue” was slowed down and given new lyrics when Jonathan Davis replaced Cinque.
In guitarist Brian “Head” Welch’s book Save Me From Myself he explained that ‘Ball Tongue’ was the nickname of the owner of a practice space called the “Underground Chicken Sound” where Korn practiced who became their tour manager (but was later fired). When they were doing drugs together, sometimes they’d get so tweaked out that Ball Tongue couldn’t talk no matter how he tried. He would just sit there with his mouth open, tongue sticking out, and the tongue looked like it had a little ball on the end. (page 51)
Bassist Fieldy told Rolling Stone:
"I remember recording “Ball Tongue” and it kinda felt like we finally hit that song that everything Korn stood for was in this song."
In 2014, Jonathan Davis explained the inspiration behind this song:
"“Ball Tongue” was about our close friend and kind of manager, from Huntington. That was his nickname because when he was tweaking, he’d just sort of seize up and his tongue was like a ball."
