“8TEEN,” like the title suggests, is an ode to being 18 years old. Khalid touches on first loves, strict parents, staying out late, smoking pot and being with your friends on the track, summing it up with a single refrain:

"Let’s do all the stupid shit that young kids do…"

"With the project, a lot of the upbeat songs seem happy. Even though the song is very upbeat, pay attention to the words long enough, and it’s like, “This isn’t the happiest song ever.” That’s exactly what I wanted to do with “8Teen.” I remember I had walked in with Joel Little, and I was like, you know what, I’m really feeling like Rihanna’s “Who’s That Chick” right now. I’m feeling super upbeat. I’m feeling peppy. How can I display this in a song? And, pretty much, we got the basis of the beat. With other music that I’ve made, I kind of give odes to some of my inspiration. But I was like, “You know what, how can I make this not sound like it? How can I give the same vibe that you would get if you listened to their song, but at the same time, it’s a completely different record?” And that was really based on Rihanna’s “Who’s That Chick.”"
