Both Coffins and Phobos showcased the band's ability to seamlessly blend prog/art metal with electronic synth-based textures, creating an otherworldly ambiance. The instrumentation is both complex and precise, with moments of chaotic intensity giving way to moments of serene beauty

Moss Grew on the Swords and Plowshares Alike sounds like an old Maudlin of the Well album rather than a new Kayo Dot one honestly, perhaps a nostalgic revival?

Something has to be said here about the new album and so I'll begin humbly. It's amazing.

I dig it, but I'm not quite getting the hype yet. I really liked Blasphemy despite its severely lacking rhythm section, and now MGotSaSa brought those back, but it's all sort of stretched and layered and goes nowhere (like PHoBoS) and then (Toby actually said this) it's also a MotW 20th anniversary album in a sense, which I like, but it's just not clicking for me yet. Hubardo recently became one of my favorite albums ever, it just gets everything right, the madness and the melancholy. This album doesn't seem to be getting anything wrong or right. Yet.

It's crazy to admit, but yeah I think you're right about it being overlooked. I remember back when that album first came out, just about everyone who heard it was already trying to figure out if it was one of the greatest albums ever made, let alone AOTY or Kayo Dot's best. That album has a style of riffing and orchestration that to this day I can't find replicated anywhere else, including other Toby Driver albums. The fact that it's so grandiose yet so accessible at the same time (by their standards, at least) is one of the most impressive things about it. Anyone who hasn't heard it needs to do so. IMMEDIATELY.

Which is why I said "by their standards". Even then, it's not that harsh and it's not that chaotic. The album is full of catchy melodies and pretty straightforward rhythms, there are less key & time signature changes, and the harmonies are not nearly as jarring or abstract as they were before, especially compared to Coyote. The only thing complex about the album is the orchestration, but that's par the course for Kayo Dot in general

I mean if we're talking "accessibility" then we should perhaps compare it to DSO or Portal's most intense works, and by that that standard, it's more accessible than the aforementioned, but still more complex than most prog/avant metal stuff. I think you're both conveying sensible points.

All I'm doing is comparing it to their other works, that's the easiest thing to do. The band said it themselves back in the day, they wanted Hubardo to be grandiose and catchy at the same time

Great tracks from Kayo Dot (+ Alora Crucible, seemingly another Toby project) just premiered on Roadburn Redux. They'll be up until Tuesday night at roadburnredux.com

Not sure, but they're one of the most mesmerising, unique, exciting and compelling bands ever. Enjoy your journey through their music!

If you look closely you can see there's an Astroglide bottle in the 'Kitty Song' video. Also, mixed feelings about Blasphemy so far but KD albums always take a while to click for me

"KD albums always take a while to click for me" Indeed! It's kind of frustrating, but at least one always knows that in the end the album will sound amazing - in it's own way.

I saw them twice this week, in San Diego and in LA. They rocked. The Blasphemy songs were completely transformed by the small venue setup but they are compositionally strong so it totally worked. The double drums and guitars took center stage over the vocals and synths making them sound more like a power prog band in the vein of 90s Crimson. Also, I met Toby and he is a super chill and nice person.

In a perfect world they would sell out Carnegie Hall, but in reality they are as underground as a band can be. There were at most 40-50 people at either show.

This project has always been different and Toby is now aiming for a wider audience. But I think the main reason why new Kayo Dot divided so many fans is because Toby decided to put his voice on the center of everything and the rest is a background for it, his voice on a pedestal rather than being a part of that complex sonic organism Kayo Dot was.

That's a good observation. It's also bitterly ironic considering some of the interviews he's done in the past criticizing certain styles for caring about the musician more than the music itself lol

Coffins on Io is a masterpiece. The overall thematic atmosphere, its cohesive sound design and the general electronic soundscape (I'm an electronic musician so I appreciate a lot the use of synths in the album). Everything is spatial and deep, percussions and rhythms are amazing, also I think it has some of the best Toby's vocal lines ever.

New album Blasphemy will be released on september 6th. Bandcamp: "... much more energetic than the ebb and flow of 2003's "Choirs Of The Eyes", a more straight-ahead rock album than "Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue" (2006) that channels the playfulness of 2010's "Coyote." Pulling from elements of black metal, jazz, pop and Driver's own wild sonic concoctions, Kayo Dot is constantly evolving."

Очень уж навороченно и слишком "арт-хаусно" для меня. Особенно в "Coyote" этот эклектичный концентрат достигает апогея. Такое ощущение что подобная музыка сочиняется не для слушателей, а больше "для себя".

"Coyote" is incredible. The composition, the lyrics, the atmosphere, very organic production and the stellar bass tone. It's hard to even compare this in one league with other music. It doesn't even feel like a music production and more like an artwork. What do you guys think about this album?

I only like one song on the album, slightly.. Even then, I think I haven't given the album enough attention and that there's definetly something to "get" that I haven't. Hubardo took a long time for me to like as well

It's a great album, quite dark and I love how predominant the bass is. I've heard some friends and random internet reviews complaining about it for being "inaccessible"... like the rest of their discography was made of radio friendly tunes.

Just got my Choirs of the Eye vinyl in the mail! I have been waiting many years for this. Well worth the wait. Thanks Toby, and whoever else helped make this happen.

So I saw on FB that KD have finished writing demos for their new album. It's a relief to hear, as while I have enjoyed Toby's solo stuff (especially the Roulette live recording) I was worried that KD might end up in hiatus for a while. I still assume the Roulette stuff will come out first (assuming he got enough money to record it properly this Winter) and then KD maybe early next year, but I'm just glad he has several things in the pipeline.

Do you ever go a long period of time without really being immersed in the discography and then you come back around and feel really shameful? :(

Yep. On the other hand, some of their albums are so great that I almost don't want to play them too often because I don't want to start taking them for granted.

I haven't gotten mine, at any rate. They said it'd take a long time to manufacture; I don't honestly expect mine for a few more months.

I visited their Facebook and it looks like they're saying later in January probably. It looks like they rejected the first round of test pressings. At this point I just expect vinyl records to take a year to manufacture; that way I'm pleasantly surprised when they show up before then. But really, manufacturing delays are pretty much the norm rather than the exception these days, because there's way more demand for vinyl and the number of pressing facilities has barely increased.

I have a very poor recollection of the last several months, TBH, so I'm afraid I don't have definitive answers on most of this. I don't remember what the specifications were, but I'm pretty sure it was the standard. I also don't remember getting an email notification, but beyond my memory issues, I am really, really bad about checking my email, to be honest. Like, notoriously so among people who know me.
