I live in a place with considerably snowy winters, and every time the first big snowstorm blows in I always make a nest of blankets in bed and listen to this. Truly a magical experience.

Such an incredible, underrated album. I can't believe this is nearly ten years old and Kate hasn't come out with an album since. She's nearly broken her 12-year silence from The Red Shoes to Aerial. Kate, we need another album please :)

#191 P4K. I was blown away by this album, though I'm not sure why. It didn't fit the mood at the time, but I couldn't stop listening anyway.

I understand that her need to transform the magic –for what we all love her– into a more subtle creative enterprise is not very alluring to you, fair point, and yet I'm satisfied that she has not given herself to the need of preserving some specific wild touch in her soundscape to prove that she can be as expressive and unique as she has always been. The power is still in the details, only that now these details are not expressed outward–when her world was still in bloom–, but inward–a time for self-examination, perhaps even reaffirmation–, such as late Walker or Cave. I actually feel proud of her, bravo.

I can see why some people might think Kate had lost her touch - whatever that means. However, I personally find subtle the magic and joy inherent in almost all of Kate's music is on display here, especially with songs like Snowflake and the title track. The piano on Snowflake has this amazing plodding, muffled quality to it - as though she were trudging through snow in the middle of night, across a dark moon-lit landscape (hours AFTER the chaos of snowfall, when all's quiet). Plus the addition of her son Bertie from the perspective of a snowflake falling, down to his mother, a bond of earth and sky represented through the voices of mother and son - to me, this is an example of her inventive and expressive use of words and language, somewhat more nuanced as she enters older age.

This is a really difficult album to get into if you're not already a fan. I just want to say to people exploring Kate's music that you need to listen to some of her early works before you write her off.
