"No Gentle Art" is a pinnacle of the entire music history period, it's just an epitome of everything it was designed to accomplish. I genuinely think that there will never be a better song from pure musical art standpoint. It's not just perfect in every aspect of it (lyrics, mixing, composition, tone of each instrument, vocal approach), but exceeds the ideal towards something unimaginable, because everything I've just listed above is extraordinary special and avant-garde in its own way: the lyrics that are vague and poetic, while maintaining the idea of something introspective; the mixing that is fat, heavy, crushing, raw, and obscure in some ways (f.e. a dub of the vocals ran through an amp in the left channel, or a weird echo on the snare) while having a really satisfying crispiness to it and being enjoyable at maximum volume; the vocals that are perfectly on the verge of feeling albiniesque raw and sandy at the same time; the sax; the weird percussion in the last part of the song.

This song is a masterpiece and should be held at a museum imo, it's just a perfect embodiment of noise-rock of which every single second can be enjoyed even though it's a long and slow sludgy song. I genuinely think that this is the best song to ever exist in the whole entire universe and that I'll never hear anything more artistic, complete, and yet obscure and fascinating in its own special way.

KEN mode rule so hard, but I swear, their last record and the singles from the Void are some of the best music I've heard in a veeery long time. They keep getting better with every release

yeah the sound is very unique because they experiment a lot and there is different recording and mastering approach on every album

Success grew a lot on me with time, I think the key thing with it is that it should be perceived as a noise-rock album rather than chaotic hardcore/mathcore/sludge album, it wasn't suppossed to sound heavy as their other albums. Sound is the most unorthodox on this one since it was tracked raw and there are no effects on vocal (and Jesse's vocal itself has a really different approach), the whole mix itself isn't heavily compressed and there probably are no double-tracks; which would all make sense since this is a record engineered by Steve Albini with his signature noise-rock sound. My only concern about it is that it sounds too quiet on streaming services, CD version on max volume is fine in this case. Also, just a fun fact, since you like Converge, KEN mode's 2011 album Venerable was produced by Kurt Ballou, guitarist of Converge. He also produces all recent Converge records himself :)

Hear, hear! I love the Romanticist! I have fond memories of blasting that while dodging the morning commuters at Osaka station!

Это настолько злая эссенция, что моя противофаза вошла в юпитер сублимировала с бозоном Хиггса и вылилась из пятого слева щупальца Ктулху. Come to Moscow!

After a year of intensive research, I'd have to say that Mennonite is where it's at.

There's this awful echo every time he hits the snare in some of the songs. Could that be intentional? t's really distracting.

KEN Mode ебашит. Что-то подобное я с кентами пытался мутить в далеких нулевых, вдохновляясь Today Is A Day, Zeni Geva, 5ive и пр. Вот KEN Mode это воплощение всего этого дерьма и это настолько заебись, что пожалуй придётся скачать всю дискографию. )

Success was a nice left turn after the direction they went with Venerable and Entrench, but I don't think another three albums of Success-like material was going to work out. This album is a nice melding of the Success sound and their earlier stuff, but made more filthy and raw.
