Wonderfully romantic comedy about Ella Peterson (Judy Holliday), a Brooklyn telephone answering service operator. Ella tries to improve the lives of her clients by passing along bits of information she hears from other clients, despite warnings from her employer Sue (Jean Stapleton) not to get involved. She falls in love with one of her clients, playwright Jeffrey Moss (Dean Martin), and is determined to meet him. The trouble is, on the phone to him, she always pretends to be an old woman whom he calls "Mom.". The police watch the answering service, even tapping the phones, believing that the girls are running a brothel. Meanwhile, a local bookie, posing as a record distributor, uses the telephone answering service to place bets, convincing the girls to believe they're taking orders for records. Ella become more and more involved in her client's lives, anonymously meeting some of them and finally bringing them all together for a very happy ending!
