I'm fascinated to wonder what John Peel's Last.fm profile would look like. If everything he ever listened to was documented on it. I assume The Fall would be the top artist, "Teenage Kicks" would be a loved track, and it would quite possibly have over one million plays overall.

Bad news: 6 Music, one of the closest broadcasting bodies - alongside Dandelion Radio - to the endlessly pioneering spirit of John Peel, is in mortal danger of being banished from the ether forever because the BBC is skint after shelling out the nastily inflated wages of Jonathan Ross and Chris Moyles et al for years. Good news: You can kick back in various ways [this will look a mess due to Last Fm's hatred of clarity enhancing paragraphs. Oh well]: http://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-strategy-review/consultation/consult_view http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=278123313911&v=info#!/group.php?v=wall&gid=278123313911 http://savebbc6an.blogspot.com/2010/03/save-bbc-6music-asian-network.html http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/speakout/BBCcutsSO?js=true http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=278123313911&topic=16360 Bad news: You don't have that long. The BBC are only going to be considering the public's opinions til May. Look lively!

One of my heroes. Even though I never heard a single Peel Session when he was on air - the principles that he stood for, the passion and the belief - they at least show me that I am not alone in this world in this manner of thought.

Everything this guy recorded was genius. The bands he picked were so insightful as to the direction music took. All the Peel Session are bad ass. Let's not forget this guy was the best Producer of everything new wave and punk.

I got my first taste of so many artists/bands via his late night shows, listening in bed when I should have been asleep as I had school the next morning. The Specials, Madness, The Bodysnatchers, The Beat, The Buzzcocks, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Flying Lizards, The Undertones, Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, I could go on and on but you get the picture. I could never get my head round the fact that one minute you'd be trying to stop your ears bleeding due to some track that sounded like white noise or worse at 300db which would then be followed by an absolute gem of a track. Sadly missed...a lot.
