With this song John looks back wistfully on an old romance that didn’t work out. This song appears to contain a direct reference to “Getaway Car” by Taylor Swift:
“I knew it from the first Old Fashioned, we were cursed, We never had a shotgun shot in the dark”.
Perhaps John intends this song as a veiled message about how he feels looking back on his past relationship with Taylor.
Further references appear in the music video. The love interest appears to be wearing the same glasses Taylor wore in her “You Belong With Me” video.
John also plays the same guitar in this video, as he did in the “Half My Heart” video, for his song which featured Taylor Swift.
