This is a cover version of the 1965 song recorded by American soul musician Marvin Gaye for the Tamla (Motown) label. Originally witten and produced by Smokey Robinson, and fellow Miracles members Ronald White, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin.

The inclusion of Ain't That Peculiar on Japan's album in 1980 is an unusual example of a band at the time taking a well-known pop song in a totally different artistic direction. As such, it is a good demonstration of the application of originality in a derivative work. It is not known whether Japan, or their record label at the time, paid royalities to Robinson, Gaye or Tamala for the use of their work, but anyone listening to this could be forgiven for thinking that any such payment would have been grossly unjust.
