Even if it has already been said a hundred times, I'll say it again: Perfect album from start to finish.

They look like they went to the family portrait studio in the suburban town square

the guitars make you feel like you're floating through a icy, frostbitten landscape while the drums feel like wind blowing and blasting you across the earth with every hit.

This album is a strong contender for the best produced black metal album of all time. It's filthy and raw without sacrificing instrumental clarity; the atmosphere it produces is superior to anything you can find in the overproduced modern schlock that plagues the genre; it has exactly the sort of spacious sound a black metal album needs to have; and perhaps most importantly, it doesn't sacrifice dynamics for loudness. My favourite Immortal album is probably still At the Heart of the Winter, but this isn't far behind it.

Actually it's one of the most coherent NBM albums of that era, so I don't really get the "unlistenable" comment. Anyway, killer album.

This is just white noise. I got this album soon after it was released, even back then when I was hungry for new metal and black metal was exciting and hyped, this was unlistenable. It didn't get better with age.

It is no shame that this album is unlistenable to people who regard Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of filth as black metal.

This album is just about perfect. So much better than the later melodic stuff, imo.

Absolutely breathtaking. The little homage to the "Imperial March" in the title track is the real icing on the cake.
