Page Hamilton is a master craftsman who came up with a sound that dozens and dozens and dozens of bands have copied over the years, but few if any of those bands have managed to write consistently appealing music the way that Page/Helmet has; most of the copycats manage one or two decent songs on a 70-minute album. Helmet has never released a bad record, nor has Helmet ever released a bloated 75-minute album full of filler, and a few of their albums reach greatness. Betty, I would say, is the best of their LPs.

Hmm... I don't know if I still agree with my own statement that they've never released a bad album ("they" being a bit of a tricky statement since Helmet has at times and I guess is currently pretty much just a Page Hamilton solo project). Size Matters pretty much sucks a big one and I certainly don't get the urge to listen to much of the recent stuff terribly often. I definitely stand by Betty being a masterpiece, though. The stuff in their classic style is among their best and the newer elements they try out are mostly fantastic. I don't know if it exceeds the terse, raw perfection of Strap It On, but it's definitely a brilliant LP.

I agree that this is a masterpiece. The only Helmet albums I've heard are this and Meantime though, so I can't really make any statements about the rest of their stuff.

I find it interesting that this album is very front loaded, in contrast to Meantime which has the amazing back half. First 6 songs are definitely the absolute best, and some of the best songs they ever recorded. Middle section of the album kinda drags for me, but I do enjoy the last 3 songs a lot. Overall a fantastic album that found Helmet changing things up a bit and adding more variety.

How good is this album. Listening to it all these years later only confirms its greatness - what else is like it? Plenty of punk & metal has come and gone but Betty still stands in its originality and technical ability. It even has really memorable songs; Betty swaps the menace and chunky riffing of Meantime with cerebral grooves and even moments of beauty. One of my favourite albums. @thejackyl yeah it does take a while to get into. I mean it's dense music :-) But once you get into it you'll be infected by its grooves and the vocal melodies won't leave your head. I imagine I'll still be listening to this 10, 20, 30 years from now, despite what will change in music fashion.

First half is probably the best thing Helmet ever released, but, second half is really boring, Overrated is the only song that tries to save it.

(note below, meaning "Betty".), and @thejackyl... whoa! to me, there is only "Betty"-- haha-- it's all i've got! naw... i /do/ have "Aftertaste" also, which also has some pretty damn good tracks. I don't have my copy of Betty anymore. that was amongst the very first few CD's i ever bought, regardless of year. i mean-- there just wasn't much worth buying back then... was there? i suppose i had been buying stuff like floyd, zep... maybe that's what i mean-- this was amongst the first of the /contemporary/ shit i'd payed money for owning. loved this CD.
