“Cherry” is written about Harry Styles' ex-girlfriend Camille Rowe, following their break-up in July 2018, during a time when Harry was feeling “not great.” Her voice is even featured in the song, in a section of dialogue at the end of the track.

Prior to Fine Line tracklist reveal on November 19, 2019, fans had speculated that a song called “Cherry” would feature on the album.

Those who purchased tickets to see Harry during his 2020 Love On Tour noticed that the General Admission pits were named after two fruits, Cherry and Watermelon, with watermelon taken from his November 16 single, “Watermelon Sugar”. The theory was supported further when watermelon slices and cherries were given to fans queuing to see his Saturday Night Live performance on November 16.
