damn, the band demo is almost the perfect compromise between the lo-fi and ocasek versions, but pollard's vocal is a bit too much of a scratch take

okay so the lo-fi version is indeed great, and as corny as the ocasek production is at times with all the blockbuster cinematics, the album version really did get that melody to soar in a way it hadn't before. it's gorgeous

Pollard is a genius. he could fart in a mic for 2 minutes and it'd be amazing.

This song is about being bullied for picking your nose. No, seriously, think about it: "When you clean out the hive, does it make you wanna cry. Are you still being followed by the Teenage FBI?". I believe Bob talked about it in Hunting Accidents. Look it up. This is also one of the worst GBV songs, by the way.

it's one of the best GBV songs, but it's been forever tainted for me since reading that detail in that book. it is such a tremendously beautiful lyric on its own – "when you clean out the hive, does it make you wanna cry?" makes me think of cleaning house and finding some old artifact from your life that suddenly devastates you. and then the next line adds some mystery, but also seems to be referring to a shared memory around that personal object, to whomever he's singing. and yet it's about annoying students and a teacher too dumb to know not to pick your nose in public. bob's a genius for deriving such an incredible image and melody from such a fucking stupid, mundane moment, but man. some things we just aren't meant to know

Wrote that comment a long time, and yeah you're both right--it's great. Sometimes profundity can come out of the grotesquely mundane, but just looking at it from a different angle. Poetry is always bigger than one possible explanation, even the author's own. Bob would understand that, and yes he's a genius. Granted, I still don't think Teenage FBI is among the canon of great GBV's songs.

@OneDrunkWalking - This record WAS produced by Ric Ocasek, so any irony was 100% intentional. This entire album sounds EXACTLY like what it is - a Ric Ocasek-produced Guided by Voices record on TVT.

"when you clean out the hive, does it make you wanna cry?" -- the melody there is perfect

Buffy the Vampire Slayer got me into this song, this song got me into GBV, and that led to my love for bucketloads of post-punk bands.

I always hoped that the "Cars synths" were supposed to be ironic in some way...
