looking back, this album really is a remarkably half-baked lil' shitpie isn't it. a major disappointment after the decent promise of the doughnut EP. you can really hear just how little pollard learned from 8 years of post-GBV irrelevance, it's almost like he deliberately made an album as anonymous and tossed-off as one of his worst '00s solo albums in an attempt to prove to himself that he never really lost it, and all his familiar bullshit about how "it's just that people want the GBV brand name" etc etc

there's also a lot of rose-tinted eyeglassing for their reunion tour the year before this album, but i was there front row in new york and it sucked. the "classic lineup" reunion was a concession pollard had dismissed with contempt for years, and everything about his eventual capitulation to it smacked of commerce and cynicism. i'm (re)listening through his whole discog chronologically and i do hope he regains his footing somewhere after this album, but for now i'm convinced 2011 was the last really good year he had (disingenuous GBV tour aside)

i pretty much stopped buying anything from GBV after Mag Earwhig. Their new direction wasn't for me. i like this new one though it took a couple of listens but it's growing on me.

I like this album. I didn't at first, but it's grown on me a lot. It's not as good as Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes/Propeller but it's still pretty fucking good.

It's uneven but far from bad. Got some really great songs on it. Waves, Doughnut, Spiderfighter, Who Invented the Sun, My Europa and Chocolate Boy are my biggest favorites. Stuff like Laundry and Lasers, Apologize and God Loves Us are all solid GBV rock n roll tunes. Some throwaways too but the only real duds for me are Toy Show and How I Met My Mother. I'd give the album 3 out of 5.

It's growing on me. I'm up to liking 16 of the 21 songs now. Still seems like their patchiest since Sandbox, but then Sandbox was followed a pretty phenomenal run of albums. I never understand why "late era" Guided by Voices is so readily dismissed. Earthquake Glue is one of their finest. And every album from Do The Collapse through to Half Smiles of the Decomposed is good to excellent.

Fantastic album. Fuck the haters. [2] There are a few duds on the album, but the good tracks are really damn good. Tobin Sprout's songs are my faves on here (Spiderfighter, Waves, Old Bones).
