every time I want to listen to a single track from this album, it makes me want to listen to it in full again

After listening to thousands upon thousands of records, I thought I already found the worst pieces of music. Turns out I was wrong. When dissecting the anatomy of this disgustingly inconsistent album, one finds a disconcerting lack of musical atomization. The symphonic cohesion escapes, leaving a fragmented mosaic where disparate elements fail to coalesce into a harmonious and an actual whole. This album, like a fractured molecule, resonates discordantly, its sonic bonds weakened, lost in the labyrinth of musical incongruity. 0.5/10

You must evaluate releases by their metric as a FULL release. This is not an EP, nor a single, but an album, made to be listened as a whole. Yet, this is where exactly it fails, it is not whole, it is, again, a self contradictory mess, which holds no kind of symphonic cohesion. And as we all know, existence exists, identity exists, and the fact that we all are conscious of those two facts is true as well, the three axiomatic basics, and, ¬(p ∧ ¬p).

kinda weird to me how hot freaks has the most listeners here, great song ofc but not one of the songs i think of as the most popular or the most emblematic of the album

I find it weird that people are always like "yeah, it's not recorded well BUT it's really good" because, to me, the low fidelity is half of the album's appeal. The way the songs are constantly clipping, ending prematurely, and bleeding into each other just adds to the album's mad-hat, surreal mood. Remastering it would take away part of its personality.

as the years pass by, little by little i try to become cool enough to put vampire on titus or tonics ahead of this one. but it just can't be done

i think you can do it for either! tonics is definitely going to be my lifetime most-listened GBV album if it isn't already, much like green, the only weezer album i listen to anymore. it's definitely a cooler, more digestible album. but then you put on blue, or b000, and it all falls apart

Yeah, I'm currently on a chronological discovery of their discography, and although there is not an album of theirs so far that I dislike, 'Bee Thousand' just stands out. As far as I'm concerned each record of theirs consistently features a number of brilliant tracks, but the sheer number of gems on this record, as well as its overall pacing, is just unmatched (so far).

all right, thanks so much for this elaborate write-up! I'm currently slowly starting to discover 'Alien Lanes' and I'm absolutely loving it. I agree that it stands out at least just as much as 'Bee Thousand'. God, this band is just so much fun

oh and I'm definitely not skipping the EP's and all that -- at least not the stuff that's on their Spotify page. I'm currently also digesting 'Scalping the Guru' , which is a ton of fun as well.

ah – that name's a little confusing now, since scalping the guru was initially an early aborted version of what became alien lanes, but now it's also the title of a compilation that collects EPs from a brief window in the early '90s. i still need to check out the latter myself since it just came out within the past few months or so – i appreciate that even though it's all old material it at least has its own unique sequencing

Yeah, it probably was recorded in the cheapest 4 track you can think of, but still, beats most overproduced alternative/indie rock of the 90s. All you need is creativity to play around with some cool chords along with a naively deep analysis of social interactions and the world around you and there you go: classic lo-fi album of the 90s and one of the best of all time.

What can one say that hasn't been said before and better by those more qualified? Sensational. Aloof. Sensationally aloof. For a real treat, listen to whilst drinking Dogfish Head's BEER THOUSAND.

Bee Thousand is easily within my top 10 when it comes to Indie albums. I must've listened to this about 30, maybe almost 40 times, it's helped me get through my job and continues to inspire me to make music the way I want to make it.

to this day, I haven't heard a record quite like this one, and I doubt I ever will. I still don't know how these guys did it

Man is this album incredible or what? One of the best albums ever. It amazes me how the guitars and bass on this record sound better than the guitars on super produced albums...they sound better to me at least.
