Terrapin Station- penned by Robert Hunter and set to music by Jerry Garcia- is considered by many Grateful Dead fans and deadheads to be their masterpiece. Performed approximately 300 times from 1977-1995. While Hunter created an original work with Terrapin Station, he drew influence from folk tales (and later, songs) regarding a "lady with a fan" that includes The Bold Lieutenant and The Lady of Carlisle. Terrapin Station is Hunter's take on this age-old story of love and what it is worth. The original album version is split into three separate movements: Lady With A Fan > Terrapin Station > At A Siding. Most (if not all) live performances included Lady With A Fan > Terrapin Station only. There is only one known instance of the band playing only Lady With A Fan and not continuing into Terrapin Station.
