Like, if you're not curled up on the floor in foetal position weeping by the end of it, you probably need to take a long hard look at yourself. Jus' sayin'.

I can't think of a more thoroughly depressing, and worthwhile, way to spend a quarter of an hour right now than listening to this song. It's quite breathtaking.

I don't think I'd ever expect an acoustic-guitar folk song to use the phrase "cathode ray."

On beauty , the only real beauty exist within us , beneath these machines of flesh and bone . Vanity dies a slow death , I hope for your sake that you flee it , because I believe your house is already on fire and you may just burn down with it.

A pretty song AND a pretty singer. She has an old time and nontraditional beauty.

Gillian Welch really is her own genre, and everything she does has a soulful quality to it. Feels like she really crafts her songs, much like Guy Clark.

JJPB: i completely agree with the comparison to Dylan's long metaphoric masterpieces. Tho, i hear it more as her "Desolation Row", despite its subject matter being quite different and clearly more similar to "Visions". also, paumanok: i love that you think this is the best song of the millennium. i agree that it makes the short-list for that title.
