I've never heard another album like this. Much like Loveless did in the 90s, there's really nothing that sounds like it - despite many other records being in the same genre as it

Don't know if it is possible to point out one single album. "Red", "Mirage" and "Dark Side of the Moon" should be included in the talks in my opinion. But I am just happy that we have so much insanely good albums that we can listen and enjoy!!

Have to add that I think "In the Court of the Crimson King" is the most influential prog album that started it all.

Love all the Gabriel-era albums and several of the post-PG ones too, but for me this is the group's peak (and one of the peaks of Prog Rock and Rock as a whole). Just incredible from start to finish with brilliant songwriting and top-notch playing. Almost every track here is a "loved" one for me.

Listening to the Blu-ray version, by the way -- what a treat for the ears this is.

This album is great! Not a dud on here. Of course, I wouldn't say there's a dud on any of the Gabriel era albums starting with Trespass.

This album is so strong, and I've listened to it so much (in the late 70's, when it had reached godly respect), that I have a hard time separating out individual tracks. I can nitpick other classic albums, too. For me, "Within Without You" on Sgt Peppers drives me crazy, and I always skip it. I hate "Us & Them" on Dark Side of the Moon -- to me it's too slow, and has far too little melody. Others will forcefully disagree.

Those two tracks are actually my favorite on the albums you mentioned. I respect your opinion, though. I agree that this album is extraordinary.

i agree "The Battle of Epping Forest" and " I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" are not as good as rest of the album and because of that its just a 4/5 album for me.

Nah, "I Know What I Like" is one of the band's best pop songs. "The Battle of Epping Forest" is great as well. There isn't a weak link on this album.

I Know What I Like is still one of the worst songs ever written by this band. This album would be so much better without it.

Same here, hessel-z. "The Battle of Epping Forest" rules! There's not a dud to be found on this masterpiece.

Always my favourite Genesis album ever since I purchased the album on its initial release in 1973. I now find that the Battle of Epping Forest does not sit well with the remaining tracks and in recent years have listened to the album on repeat with this track deleted. For me, the remaining tracks all standout as classics.

Huh? It's a core song, and completely consistent with their classic sound. You could plug it into Lamb and not notice.

Yes I was wrong to say "does not sit well" within the album because it is clearly part of a classic album. I don't dislike The Battle Of Epping Forest and have probably listened to it some 30 times over the last 40 plus years - but I must have listened to the rest of the album 300 or 400 times given the number of plays I have scrobbled since I have been with last.fm. Selling England By The Pound is my favourite album of all time.

This album is just unfairly awesome. It's like they were on another planet throughout the creation of this record. Pretty much every song on here is something most artists would give their firstborn to write and record. "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" is rightly regarded as one of the best songs in all of Prog. "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" is both maddeningly catchy and utterly brilliant. "Firth of Fifth"is god-tier and the type of song that works so well that tons of other bands and artists try to copy it for years. "More Fool Me" is just as catchy as "I Know What I Like..." "The Battle of Epping Forest" is one of the boys' best epics. Then you have the closing suite, which is quite good as well. I will agree with Cassandra-Leo that his suggested ordering of the tracks makes the record even better, though.

Suggested new listening order: 1. Firth of Fifth, 2. I Know What I Like, 3. More Fool Me, 4. The Battle of Epping Forest, 5. After the Ordeal, 6. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, 7. The Cinema Show, 8. Aisle of Plenty. I think this has even more weight as an album, and the closing suite becomes comparable to, and quite possibly even better than, Supper's Ready. After listening to the album this way I'm more ready than ever to declare this Genesis' finest moment.

I only discovered a couple of days ago that Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show, and Aisle of Plenty were originally conceived as one long track, which explains one of the few things about this album that has always puzzled me, namely that the coda to Dancing seems to build up tension for a resolution that never comes. It was supposed to lead into the intro to The Cinema Show.

1973 was truly an excellent year for prog. This, Tales of Topographic Oceans, Dark Side of the Moon, Brain Salad Surgery, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Camel, etc.[3] and don't forget "Tubular Bells" and "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" by Wakeman :)

The instrumental section of "The Cinema Show" is one of the highlights of any music ever recorded. I can never have that as background as it takes my full attention. I feel as though I'm being taken on some sort of, say, magic carpet ride or something.

Freaking I Know What I Like derails the first half of this album for me. Thankfully, it picks back up right at Firth of Fifth.
