The journey has begun in 2006, when DoğukanKALENDER and KenanTURANDAR decided to play music which fuses folk influenced melodies, metal music and classical elements. In a short while, long term friend guitarist M.CantuğAĞIÇ joined the band to fill the lead guitarist role.
Due to various reasons the band has not been active until 2011. Then the trio decided to activate the band so they hastened the composing and promoting process.
GÜRZ made its first live appearance at UniRock’11 Open Air Festival in Istanbul in September 2011; sharing the stage with bands such as MAYHEM, VADER, ORPHANED LAND and DECAPITATED. Afterwards they gave a few local club concerts in Istanbul.
Subsequent to a few lineup changes; finally in 2012, one of the best drummers of Turkish Metal scene, Erce ARSLAN joined the band and the lineup was complete.
Its first release which is titled “Sons of Earth and Sky” was mastered by Aybars ALTAY from SETH.ECT. The EP is released in March 2012 from the band’s official page, free of charge. It is also available to purchase in CD format with an additional live track ‘’ Rite of the Fallen '’ . In its first release GÜRZ is telling tales of shamanic culture, ancient shaman tribes, their struggles with life and stories of fictional heroic characters to create a new dimension in the metal scene. The EP received plenty of positive reactions across the globe and it has been downloaded more than 7000 times.
In summer of 2012, the band played at METAL HEADS’ MISSION Festival XIII, in UKRAINE, which took part in 2-3-4 August 2012. They were chosen to be the Co-Headliner of Technical Death Metal Kings NILE with just a few shows and one release, but due to some circumstances and various problems, they played on the third day of the festival.
In November 2012 the band participated in a folk metal night in Budapest, HUNGARY, by the call of their friends from Hungarian folk metal band NIBURTA.
With a steady evolution, the sound of GÜRZ is changed to more Ethnical / Oriental Folk Metal style which is dominantin their new compositions. With that sound GÜRZ has been commissioned to compose and arrange some ethnical compositions by TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) for documentations about Anatolia.
Gürz is returning to the scene with their first album ‘ Cosmology Divine ‘ which will be released in 2013. This time more aggressive and extreme sound will reach the auditions ears which will be harmonized with tastes of Middle Eastern ethnical instruments and Anatolian chantings.
Now GÜRZ is mainly focused on working on their first full length album and it wants to expand its borders and searches for more international gigs and festivals. They also received a couple of offers from various international festivals for 2013. The main idea behind all is spreading the word of ''GÜRZ'' and its new sound.
