Realeased 1966, the first major label realease of Frank's group at the time and off and on through the 70's, The Mothers of Invention. Freak Out! was a ground breaking album in it's day. Nobody had ever heard or a rock band putting out a double album for their debut in 1966, not to mention the music was way ahead of it's time, lyrically and musically. The music ranges from 20th century classical to doo-wop farce. A talent scout was out and about one night in L.A. and happened to wander into the Whiskey-A-Go-Go where The Mothers were playing that night. He managed to catch them playing their one and only blues number. Impressed, he brought Frank to MGM and got the band signed to the label based on the one tune he heard. The day they got to the studio to start recording this album they started up with "Who Are the Brain Police", which if you notice, is far from the blues! According to Zappa in his autobiography, he saw the producer and engineers in the control room not knowing what to make of what was going on in the studio and scrambling for telephones… Tom Wilson, by the way produced this album as well as Absolutely Free, who is also known for producing some of the earlier Bob Dylan albums.
