The Light That Dwells still most played album here and IMHO their only reach for absolute greatness. They never managed to top that release, unfortunately.

i agree 100%, but they've also never disappointed either, i still get something out of each of their releases.

This new one is showing some good evolution finally. I felt like they were repeating themselves for a while, but this Key to a Vanishing Future takes a nice step forward.

this kicks major ass. jumped into their music due recommendation not expecting anything and in return i got pretty much everything. i often get a very distinct feeling of woe, longing and overall melancholy from their instrumentation, so they are doing something very right for me atleast. wonder if anyone else feels this or is it just me? but then there also are stand out stuff too, especially the bass work on "key to a vanishing future" is just so *good italian pizza sound*.

five years ago, i wrote that Vigilance Perennial reminded me a bit of early Genesis: https://www.last.fm/music/Falls+of+Rauros/+shoutbox/2789912:shoutbox:d4db9de2-63df-471f-ad12-b45d10283059 i'm mentioning this because Key to a Vanishing Future reminds me *a lot* of early Genesis. also '80s Genesis. the press release wasn't lying when it said this was a big change from their past work. it's still unmistakably a black metal album, and the guitar tones are still frequently similar to the ones found on their past albums, but it's stylistically quite different. i'm 100% OK with this, because i love the direction they've gone in, and the songs are beautiful. fantastic production too, as is always the case when Colin Marston does the mixing/mastering.

Oh, it was definitely meant to come across more enthusiastic than that. So far it sits comfortably in my top three AOTY.

I honestly can’t decide which is the best USBM band. Grand Belgians Key, panopticon, falls of Rauros, imperial triumphant or mare cognitum? Decisions, decisions.

Checked out the Mosiac Window, but not sure how to feel about it. Has some good melodies but is lacking atmosphere. Seems odd for a black metal project to come out of a place that doesn't get a winter, as they're LA based and the music does seem to give off heat rather than a chill. As for Woman is the Earth, I do urge you to check them out. Their musical progression is the inverse of what you expect, as they started more atmospheric but got more brutal and punishing with time. This Place That Contains My Spirit and Torch of Our Final Night are great soothing atmospheric journeys, but the Thaw EP and their most recent Dust of Forever are both devastating and kick the crap out of you. Dust of Forever might be my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of their releases.

I can understand that one. Its got an atmoaphere, but it reminds me of.prog and not black metal funny enough. Atmo to brutal? That doesnt happen too often

Ill start with the atmo and move on to the more recent stuff, as going from heavy to light will be standard for most bands, so itll be great to go the opposite route.

Ash Borer, Yellow Eyes and Addaura are up there too. Well of Woe, Svierg and El-Ahrairah are overlooked gems imho. I've given up on picking the best one, enjoying them all

Definitely a solid band, however something is missing to really make them unique.

Ash Borer and Yellow Eyes are phenomenally good. As far as Addaura, I love Burning for the Ancient, but that's the only release I like by them, their recent releases haven't gripped me. Alda should probably be mentioned too, Alda is lovely.

Atmospheric BM be like the most beautiful music you’ve ever heard + the most horrible sounding vocals you’ve ever heard

Superb album! Really digging the way they weaved in the guitar solos and all those "monumental" moments without going cheesy for a single second. Marston's production is pure genius, no surprise here. Blast it through a decent pair of headphones and the music just breathes

Part of what made this band so alluring to me was the more raw production, plus the folk elements. On the new album these seem to have taken a back seat. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a fantastic release but it also sounds similar to other atmospheric/post-black metal bands of today. They do it better than most though.

Patterns in Mythology is another great release! Hope to see them live when they come through!

They've done it again. Not that I ever had any doubt. I'm not sure how this stacks up against the likes of The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood and Vigilance Perennial after just one listen, but it's certainly in the same league. Also, can Colin Marston just produce all metal albums from now on? Please and thanks. The production was already very good on the last few releases, but this just takes their sound to another level.

Halfway through the year, I think Vigilance Perennial is the best album released so far this year, and one of the best metal albums released so far this decade. This may feel like a strange comparison, but the acoustic passages remind me of early Genesis, in a way that very few other acts ever have managed to pull off. I don't know if that's what the band had in mind, but the atmosphere is similar, and very few other acts have ever managed to capture that kind of atmosphere. I'm honestly not sure I can rank Falls of Rauros' last few releases, but VP may have managed to top The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood, which I would've thought to be an impossible feat a few years ago.

...and each time I listen to it, it gets even better. I try not to listen to albums too often most of the time, but I'm finding it difficult to avoid with this one; it's so gorgeous and emotionally powerful. I'll be shocked if anyone outdoes this one this year.

Me too. The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood is far superior. Hail Wind is great, but the songwriting on Rotten Wood is just out of this world.

I agree with both of you, but I suspect some of this may be due to the decline in users on last.fm. If you look at the last year's worth of stats, most of the top tracks have been from The Light That Dwells and their later releases.

for anyone else who is a doofus like me and usually ignores split albums, the falls of rauros/panopticon split is excellent and i highly suggest giving it a spin at https://bindrunerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/falls-of-rauros-panopticon-split-12

Been waiting for years, well...worth it! I still prefer 'Hail Wind...', thought. The length of the album besides being 'normal' is secondary to it being coherent and well-constructed, I could enjoy more of course, but I wouldn't call that a 'flaw'...
